Medial Patello-Femoral Ligament Tears

The Medial patellofemoral ligament is a major thick band of tissues inside the knee joint that keeps the kneecap centered in position along the front of the knee and provides stability to the knee cap. The ligament allows to tracks well during knee movements. MPFL injuries can cause a kneecap dislocation affecting mobility. MPFL injuries are common among young, active females who are involved in strenuous physical or sport activities. At Kovilpatti Venkateswara Hospital, we provide treatment services for mild or severe MPFL injuries with proper diagnosis and Knee Cap Treatment procedures to rectify the damage and to restore knee cap function. The treatment procedures vary from counter top medication to reconstructive surgery followed by physical therapy depending on the severity of the MPFL damage.

Symptoms of MPFL injury

Common symptoms associated with MPFL injury include:

  • Knee buckling during activity.
  • Sliding out of kneecap during knee movement.
  • Swelling of the knee
  • Restricted knee joint movement
  • Pain and tenderness along the affected joint.
  • Stiffness of the knee joint after prolonged sitting

Diagnosing MPFL injury

Through clinical and physical examination the doctor evaluates the symptoms and knee joint range of motion to understand the condition, strength, and flexibility. Imaging techniques are required to understand in detail the cause and severity of ligament damage through a X-rays or an MRI scan.

Treatment options for MPFL injury

At Kovilpatti Venkateswara Hospital, we provide the most advanced and sophisticated diagnostics and treatments techniques for patients with MPFL injury and to restore the knee range of motion. We bring together a multidisciplinary team of highly qualified and well experienced medical and surgical specialists who offer patients safe and effective treatments and rehabilitative programs to offer the intact continuum of care for the patient. The treatment method varies depending on the severity of the condition.

For minor ligament damage conservative management strategies are applied to ease the pain and discomfort caused by the condition followed by a sessions of physical therapy to improve the strength, flexibility and motility of the knee joint. For more severe cases, surgical procedures are required to restore the veracity of the injured ligament to retain the stability to the knee. Ligament Reconstruction helps to regain the stability.

The MPFL reconstruction surgery involves reconstructing the damaged ligament using a graft selected from the area. The ortho-surgeon initiates the procedure by administering a dose of anesthesia followed by making few small incisions in the front inner part of the knee bone. A tendon is removed and shaped into a new ligament that replaces the damaged ligament. Furthermore incisions are made at the front of the knee to reconstruct the ligament from the front inner edge and are held in position with plastic screws or sutures to prevent misplacement of the graft during knee movement.

After the surgery, during the healing period, the physical therapist plan customized treatment program to improve the range of motion, focusing on muscle strength and stability. The therapists manipulate the muscles and joints to improve their motion and flexibility. Wearing braces during the healing period help reduce pain and swelling.

At Kovilpatti Venkateswara Hospital, we provide safe and effective treatment approaches for mild or severe MPFL injury and enables a faster recovery. To know more MPFL injury treatment plans, book an appointment now.
