Headache is the condition that occurs with pain in any region of the head. Headache can be isolated or spread across the head on one or both sides of the head. The pain can be a sharp pain or a throbbing sensation that develops gradually or suddenly. Types of Headaches

Headaches are classifies as tension headaches, cluster headaches, and migraines.

Tension Headaches: Tension headaches are caused by the tightening of the muscle in the scalp due to poor posture or stress. This type of headache may last for several minutes or several days and may reoccur.

Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches occur as a burning pain on one side of the head or behind the eye that extends for long periods of time.

Migraines: Migraines is formed by changes in the activity of nerve pathways and brain chemicals causing severe throbbing headaches that affects one side of the head. Genetic factors and environmental factors affect a person’s receptiveness to developing migraines and may last anywhere from several hours to several days.

There are basically two types of migraine headaches, migraine with aura that causes visual disturbances that consist of bright spots, flashing lights, or moving lines and migraine without aura that are less severe than the former case.

Hemiplegic migraines:  Hemiplegic migraines are another type of migraine accompanied by slurred speech and numbness on one side of the body.

Head ache Symptoms

Most headaches causes any of the following symptoms:

  • drowsiness
  • fever
  • vomiting
  • facial numbness
  • slurred speech
  • weakness in an arm or a leg
  • Pressure around the eyes

Diagnosing Headaches

The doctor takes the medical history, performs a physical examination and a complete neurological evaluation to determine the underlying cause of a headache. Certain diagnostic tests including a complete blood count, skull and sinus x-rays or a MI scan is performed to complete the evaluation.
