Spinal Disc Herniation
Treatment & Surgery
The spine is composed of individual bony vertebrae and soft disc stacked alternately one on top of the other and provides overall support to the body. A healthy spine has strong muscles and bones, flexible tendons, ligaments and sensitive nerves. A strain, injury or disease affecting any of these structures associated with the spine can lead to spine problems. Spinal intervertebral discs act as a shock absorber and allow bending and twisting of the spine. The spinal discs are filled with highly dense gel-like material that absorbs shocks and loads and also makes the spine flexible. The spinal discs protect the nerves that run down and pass out of each level of the spinal column.

Types of Spinal Disc Problems
- The most common spinal disc problem is a prolapsed, slipped or herniated disc when the outer rim of disc tears and the inner spinal disc’s gel-like substance bulges out into spinal canal compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots resulting in pain, weakness, numbness, loss of function depending on degree of prolapse and region involved. Other types of spinal disc problems include degenerative disc disease when the spinal disc shrinks as we get older, injury from accidents, infection, and cancers that affect the spine.
- Symptoms associated with spinal disc problems include severe back pain that may extend into one or both legs. When the slipped disc presses on a nerve, severe pain is experienced from the neck-thru to shoulder, arm, forearm to fingers in upper limbs and from the back radiating into the hips, buttocks, and legs in lower limbs. The pressure on the nerve may cause numbness and tingling effect.
