Spondylosis/ Spondylitis

The human spinal is composed of series of bones stacked onto each other and cushioned by a soft inner portion and a tough outer ring. The gel-like cushion protects the bones by absorbing the shocks from various daily activities. Spondylosis is a degenerative damage caused in the spinal disk and is often related to osteoarthritis causing wear and tear of spine vertebrae. Spondylosis can occur in any part of the spine causing persistent lower back pain, stiffness in the back and legs and lower back tenderness.

Spondylitis is a condition caused from the inflammation of one or more vertebrae.  Spondylosis and Spondylitis differ from each other from the cause of the condition. Spondylosis is caused by a degenerative condition while spondylitis is caused due to inflammation in one or more vertebrae.

Diagnosing Spondylosis/Spondylitis

The clinical examination includes performing simple tasks and exercises to diagnose the condition. X-rays and CT scan of the spine help determining the cause of various spine conditions.

Treatment and pain management

The treatment plan depends on the cause of the medical condition and severity of pain and discomfort caused by the condition. Nonsurgical treatments to ease pain and to encourage the bone flexibility and stability include wearing a back brace to provide an extra support, instructing on physical therapy exercises and regular follow ups, over-the-counter prescription and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and discomfort.

Epidural steroid injections, nerve root blocks, facetal blocks helps  reduce the pain. Surgical method such as spinal fusion is performed using a bone graft or metal rods to stabilize the spine. Under the expertise of a physical therapist, various treatment methods including heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and muscle-release techniques are performed to ease the back muscles, ligaments and soft tissues to reduce pain and discomfort caused by the condition. The therapy also improves the flexibility, strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, and improve the posture. Regular use of these techniques prevents the reoccurrence of back pain.

Spondylosis/Spondylitis is a chronic condition and requires treatment methods depending on the severity of the condition. In few cases, non surgical treatments and other treatment techniques including physical therapy improves the flexibility and strength of the spine. In severe condition, surgery is recommended to release a compressed nerve, damaged ligament or to remove bone spurs from the spinal vertebrae. Endoscopic spine surgery may help here for a few.
